About Nuru ya Jamii CBO

Every young person holds limitless potential

Our name, Nuru ya Jamii (Light of the Community), reflects our core conviction: when you empower a youth, you light up an entire society.

We focus on teens, young adults and youth, and we bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity. We go beyond handing out support. We raise responsible, healthy and resilient young people who are ready to take charge of their own futures and transform their communities.

Our vision

To foster a generation of responsible, healthy and empowered youth who believe in their potential and lead with purpose.

Our mission

To champion the potential of teens and young adults by delivering critical health support, transformative education, practical skills and bold leadership development.

Why we exist

The "It's Possible" mindset

We break down the barriers that hold young people back so they can realise their full potential. We work to shift mindsets from "I can't" to "It is possible", and through programmes tailored to each young person, we turn ambition into action.

Help a young person believe

How we work

Three steps from potential to a thriving future

Meet youth where they are

In community halls, schools and homes, in a language and setting young people trust.

Break down the barriers

School fees, hunger, poor health and lack of guidance. We tackle what is holding each young person back.

Give them a platform

Skills, mentors and leadership opportunities that let them build a brighter future and lift others with them.

Our core strategic pillars

A holistic framework for a changing world

We drive lasting impact through four connected pillars that prepare youth to thrive in body, mind, skills and character. Your gift supports all of them.

Youth Mentorship Forum

We packed the community hall with teens and young adults for an afternoon of honest talk about growing up, staying in school, avoiding drugs and making good choices. Mentors shared their own stories and the young people took the floor to ask hard questions.

  • Open conversations on respect, responsibility and believing "it is possible"
  • Peer sharing where participants tell their own stories
  • Every participant served tea and a snack

Community Food Hamper Drive

Hunger keeps young people out of class and pushes families into desperate choices. Our volunteers packed and handed out food parcels with flour and household staples to families who needed them most, with young people and children receiving parcels on behalf of their homes.

  • Parcels packed by our own volunteers
  • Families identified with help from local leaders
  • Distributed openly, in public, so the community can see where gifts go

Education

School Fees, Academic Guidance & Graduations

School fees are the biggest reason bright young people leave school. We present fees support directly to students and their schools, then stay in touch until they finish. When they graduate, the whole CBO turns up to celebrate.

  • Fees paid straight to the school
  • Academic excellence guidance: study skills, goal setting and exam preparation
  • Mentors follow up each student's progress
  • Graduates come back to mentor younger students

Leadership

Human Rights & Civic Awareness

Young people who know their rights, and the rights of others, become better neighbours, citizens and leaders. Our facilitators teach the basics of human rights, respect for women and girls, and how young people can take part in community decisions.

  • Interactive flip-chart sessions in plain language
  • Elders and youth learning in the same room
  • Focus on respect, consent and non-violence

Shared Meals & Fellowship

A warm cup of tea and a meal together turns a meeting into a family. After every session we eat together, which gives young people time to talk with mentors one on one.

  • Tea and snacks at every forum
  • Informal mentoring over meals
  • Volunteers from the community cook and serve

Skills

From Training to the Kitchen

Practical skills turn talent into a living. One of the young people we support trained in culinary skills and is now cooking in a professional kitchen. Stories like his show what "It is possible" looks like in real life.

  • Hands-on skills that lead to real jobs
  • Mentors who help with placements and work readiness
  • Success stories that inspire the next group of youth

Community Outreach & Health Forums

We take our programmes into the open so that youth, parents and partners can learn together. Outreach forums cover youth health, including sexual and reproductive health guidance with referrals to trusted health services, as well as drug abuse awareness and positive parenting.

  • Sexual and reproductive health guidance and referrals
  • Youth, parents and partners in one conversation
  • Open-air forums that reach the whole community

Our team

A team of volunteers who show up

Nuru ya Jamii is run by a dedicated team of volunteers from our own community: mentors, facilitators, organisers and partners. They give their time so that young people have someone to look up to and someone to call.

Our volunteers plan every activity, pack every food parcel, mentor every group and report back to donors on what was done.
